Vive La Différence!

 #17 Motif Challenge#2
Much better!  Perhaps the first one suffered precisely because it was the first one; I never seem to get it right initially.  This one is so much more defined.  The little coloured spots are where the lock join happens;  I cannot seem to get rid of them. Not tight enough, but I can now move on.  Step away, Fox...

Had I done a regular join, I could have used the appropriate colour, but the join would not have been firm.  What's a girl to do?

  1. Much better, indeed! Lately, I've been having trouble with the first time also. Maybe it's something in the air.

  2. You have hit the nail on the head. Perfection takes practice. I absolutely HAVE to do each new design first time with some basic thread, just to see how it works and what bits need more care etc.

Then I can do my best and be happy the second time.

    Most designs are worth that.

  3. The best method I found for avoiding those dratted color spots was to use the Catherine Wheel join. Love it, love it, love it. The dip in the chain is less pronounced, but there is no blip.

  5. Thanks, Y'all! (NOT a Canadian thing - trying out the Southern greeting!)

Heather - I LOVE this thread and now - sob- it is nearly gone. I must use some of my enormous stash, BUT I shall return for more!

Suzanne - I am gong to Google Catherine Wheel join ??? Roll join? I have no idea what that means! But, thanks for the visit!

Thanks Carla and Diane. Yes, it must be something in the air - of course!

Tatskool - I always use thread I like the first time! Makes me take more care@

  9. Hi Fox,

Your motif looks great. A slope and roll join may be a better choice. It's what I was using for several motifs awhile back. You can find more info here: http://www.ds9designs.com/patterns_free.shtml . Scroll down to the bottom to find the links to the instructions.

  10. You'll find the Catherine Wheel join on Debbie Arnold's site. In essence, it is the same as working the second half of a split chain, or covering a cabone ring; which is why it produces a less pronounced dip than a lock join.

  11. That's VERY pretty Fox! The colors in that thread a so refreshing. I always though that the little dot of contrasting color at a lock join was just an unfortunate byproduct of variegated threads and was pretty much unavoidable. I will have to look up the Catherine Wheel join also.
