Calamitous Coronet

Linda Davies has designed a beautiful doily and then created a smaller version in the small Coronet Doily, which you can download from her blog here.

This is not small to me as this piece already measures over five and a half inches across.

I have got this far and that last round is driving me crazy!  Another of the directional issues, I'm afraid.

Also, I am using the Valdani thread and now I realize why this is a very bad idea!  I love the plush feel of the finished tatting, but I do not enjoy using the thread one bit.  It is soft, breakable and splits often.

Because of the myriad choice of wondrous colour available, I forget why I should not buy this thread; I succumbed yet again to the temptation, lured by the palette.

I hope umintsuru is all right with my posting this photo of her test-tat of my Lillian pattern, which is still awaiting one other test-tat before I release it to Tat-land.  I like what she has done here very much.

Thank you umintsuru!

  1. I received a sample of Valdani in an exchange a long time ago, and I can't really say that I liked tatting with it. I was tempted to purchase some Valdani because of the colours but each time I remember how I did not enjoy the thread then. So far, that first experience has held me back.

    1. Ah Jon, you have stronger resolve than I! I should follow my own advice and trust my instincts. But I do not and it gets me into trouble every time!

  3. An absolutely gorgeous looking piece of tatting. I haven't given up hope yet that one day I'll get better at my faltering attempts.

    1. Don't give up JPP! Just keep those shuttles moving! It will all come together eventually. I know! Because if I can do it with that blasted dyslexia stuff, anyone can! Fox : ))

  4. I get pulled in by the Lizbeth thread -- all those great colorways, but I just don't like tatting with it! So I crochet with it instead and it works wonderfully for me then.

    1. Jane, I am not wild about Lizbeth - never have been, but I have never found a thread I like better... except Karey Solomon's and other HDT's... Maybe it is just my tatting!

  5. The perils of a tempting color palette! Good luck on getting that doily finished. It looks like it could be very pretty.

Umintsuru did a beautiful job on "Lillian".(Of course, what else would we expect?) I love the color she used and the special doodad in the center. Nice pattern there, Fox!

  6. I am having the same trouble with my thread too! It's a size 10 older ecru thread that splits and breaks if I pull too hard. I'm going to end up using my unfinished doily as a coaster, but I totally know how you feel! I'm about to start the same pattern in a stronger thread in fall colors :) Sneek-peek/spoiler for my next blog post! teehee!

    1. Hi, Allison! I had considered changing threads, but I have so little left to do I am going to plod on... and I do mean plod. Never again the Valdani! Good luck with yours. Thanks for the comments - and don't worry - mum's the word!

  7. I can't believe the amount of tatting you do!! This doily is beautiful in red I know what you mean about Valdani. I have only one ball, and decided it was too tricky to tat with. I had to tat with much less tension.

Have you seen the recording they made at Tat Days a few hours ago on the Palmetto website? It was neat to see it live at 6:00. They showed the speed-tat contest. Jane was one of the contestants, and also two sisters from Sweden. Another gal was wearing her tatted hat! Everyone can view this since it is recorded. I got a peek at Marilee in the 'audience'. The video is choppy, and occasionally interrupted by ads, but it is amazing technology, especially to see it live. I got very emotional seeing the display of Gina's tatting.

    1. Oh, Kathy! Thank you for pointing me to this site - I watched the video and enjoyed it immensely! I too was touched to see all of Gina's tatting... Thanks again - I would not have seen it without your comment.
