Snowballing Spring

Renukek's Spring Napkin looks as if it might be one of those ... ample pieces! We just don't know what she is up to! : )

I have actually finished a few more squares. It is growing on me.

I have done four corner squares in a darker combo, thinking they will "ground" the pattern. Do you think this is a valid assumption? Any thoughts?

What a terrific aid the Random Granny Square Generator is. Frivole had mentioned it and I am glad I checked it out. It is possible with the colours I have chosen to have 100 different squares, all figured out on the diagram I downloaded.

I ask you- where would we be without the Net? It's an amazing time we live in.

Almost forgot to grumble!

The new #80 Lizbeth? Not so good. I am NOT impressed. The red ball is particularly bad - fuzzy, dull and inconsistent in diameter. Splits easily. Flimsy.

Wanting to compare it to another brand, and not a sewing thread like Sulky, I sampled one of the DMC #80 vintage balls that Tally Tatty so kindly sent me. No comparison.

The DMC is smooth, shiny and consistent. A joy. I am so disappointed as I now have a new, little stash of the Lizbeth. I hope my choices are not like the red ball.

  2. Now you have made one of Renuleks pieces before Fox so know the excitement and intrigue as to how many rounds there will be! I am so enjoying making mine as I can see you are, shame about the thread though.

    1. Exactly! Who knows! I do enjoy her designs. Yours are both very pretty. I like the gray one very much.

  3. Your doily is looking great!! I love the colours you are using! I may have to give it a try too!!! And good work on the baby blanket too!! As for the new Lizbeth....sometimes it takes time for them to improve new products.

  4. What a shame you don't like the Lizbeth 80, because the colours you've chosen for this doily are really lovely. DMC dentelles is a better thread, but there's not the range of choice! It untats very easily, I am using it for my laboriously re-started wedding hanky.

    1. I just do not have luck with Lizbeth thread. Never have. For me, it has always been an inferior product too bad because the colours are so good.

  5. Such nice colours! The doily is looking really good, such a shame about the Lisbeth thread though. After your last post I considered trying to hunt some down - it's harder to get in the UK. I must admit though, I've never had any problems with the DMC size 80. I hope the Lizbeth behaves for the rest of it, as it looks so good.

  6. Is that DMC Fil à Dentelle in size 80? I've always loved it though I don't tat in such fine threads as often nowadays. Luckily I still have quite a few balls stashed away. I've not looked into it in recent times but DMC did use to come in an incredible range of colours.

  7. Yes - Tally Tatty sent me a couple of colours that they do not carry anymore. Apparently you can get only a small number of shades now, not the greater variety they produced in the past.

  8. DMC is one of my favorite threads. It is consistent, tightly wound, and very smooth. I wish they still made all the colors they did in the past.

    The doily is looking wonderful.

  9. It is very pretty. Try sending a note to the place where you sent for the Lizbeth. They might be able to replace it or something. Give them a chance to vindicate themselves.

  10. Das Fühlingsdeckchen sieht wunderschön aus. Sie haben ein sehr, sehr schönes Garn genommen, tolle Farben.

  11. The DMC is the only size 80 thread that I have tried and I love how it feels in my hand when tatting with it. I am so glad that they still come with many colours compared to the DMC corrdonnet thread, which is another DMC thread that I like. Plus, I can purchase them locally and not have to order them online.

  12. The doily is looking so great on different blogs that I really think I might have to make it! Love the colours, what a shame you're having problems with the thread.

  13. Hi Fox

Your mat is looking beautiful, love the colour way.
Your granny squares are looking beautiful and will look beautiful when finished.
    Keep up the good work.

  14. That may have been a bad ball of Lizbeth you got, because I generally find their size 80 is better than the larger sizes. OTOH, there is just no comparison between Lizbeth and DMC. DMC is absolutely the best! I just wish they would quit discontinuing colors.

    1. Yes, I agree. Definitely better than the other sizes, but not this ball of red!

  15. Red dye is hard on threads, particularly when you need the deep saturation you have in the thread for the doily.

Great looking doily by the way.

I think the darker colors for the corners will add spark to your very nice blanket and I like the colors you have chosen.

    1. Yes, from my wool experience, I know about red dye...but the thread is really fuzzy... I will post a pic in the next post.

Thanks for the blanket input. I thought the darker squares would work, and it is great to have some agreement on that! : )

  17. I love the color of the thread you're using! Maybe it's just the red and the other colors might be just fine.

  18. LOVE this doily!! Love the color. Pity you have not had a good run with the Lizbeth.
Brenda has just finished dyeing some thread for me and used Lizbeth 20 and 40 as the base...she is terribly disappointed as there are so many knots she can hardly get a 50m skein without a join and the thread is not consistent in diameter.

  19. I thought I had to try Lizbeth 80, because you talked about it and they come with amazing colours, but now that you said that... About DMC, you know I love it, but I agree with Ladytats, that red dye (and black too) is slightly different from other colours, also in dmc 80. That doily is lovely, and I love the colours of the squares.
