Edgy About The Edging

Taking a page from Frivole's blog...but I tatted the original pattern...

I cannot decide whether to tat a complete hankie border with this pattern - it is tedious going.  Using #80, after trying to tat this in #16 Finca several - about four - times -  I switched to the DMC, which for this particular pattern works much better.

It seems to call out for a crisp, highly twisted thread
because of all the switching and the long chains.

#10-100 Motif Challenge

  1. What will you do with it if you don't make a whole hanky edging?

  2. Thanks Miranda! i think your comment prompted the solution... I could make a round motif!

  3. Wow, that is a beautiful pattern, but seriously time consuming. Personally I would go with a round motif or make it one round in a doily.

I've done some intricate hankie edgings before, but it ends up that I use the hankie to show off the tatting, then every time I wash it I need to re-block it and get frustrated, so I don't end up using it and it is just a show piece. But then it does not get shown, because I just leave it on the dresser as I'm not using it. Vicious cycle.

Maybe I'm just too literal and think that a hankie should be used.

  4. It is a beautiful edging, but Heather's absolutely right, it would need some help every time the hankie is washed. As an alternative you could have the hankie framed; but as it's so intricate that it's slowing you down, I'd turn it into a bookmark and tat a simpler edging for the hankie.

  5. A beautiful edging! It would depend on what I would use the hanky for whether I would put that much work into it. If it was to be a specific decoration, yes, and I would show it off proudly. If I had no plan for the final product, I would choose something simpler.

Sorry - I take the fun out of everything with my "practical" take!

  7. lol it's very beautiful... but I would definitely not have the attention span to finish unless perhaps the hankie were rather small. I started a hankie last week. I haven't finished and it was of MK's leaf braid, so it was nothing as fancy as your crowns :o) but I did think about cutting it (the hankie) into four pieces and then doing an edging.. I think I could handle that.
So, all that just to say I think you are making a wise decision :o)

  8. Very pretty! Is this the same pattern that Frivole adapted so that the rings would be smaller? I think it would be pretty as a picture frame... you know, with a picture of a little princess inside. : )
