Tatted Trivet

That is what happened to the hat.

Yes, a trivet; that hat, now a kitchen item, has already
been given to a young couple who just became engaged!

I have tried this pattern several times and it always lies flat,
never curves into a hat. I'm done trying!

Done with the thick thread too. It's a wrist destroyer!
Look at the difference: #80 compared to #12 perle:

Here is the progress of the Fikkert piece, which is S-L-O-W going.
And fiddly. Those little ovals are not fun.

  2. Oh I was just working on Ben's and going to post in a bit. Yours is beautiful, I like mine but my colors are a bit festive, not sure it would go with anything. your white ovals look great I was wondering what they look like up close :) am excited to move to that round.
I know what you mean about the large size threads they hurt the hands. :(

  3. Both pieces are gorgeous :). Shame about the hat pattern not curving.

  4. How far have you gone on the hat in other attempt? I haven't made it either, but looking at the picture, it looks like the later rounds are what really pull it into hat shape.

I totally agree about finer thread being more comfortable to tat with. Sadly, so many things are designed with size 20, and due to the addition of beads/ buttons/ doodads won't work with anything smaller, or end up ridiculously small if tatted in size 80. I'm always happy to find a pattern that works with any size thread!

    1. I know... But I did the math and for a baby, in thicker thread, it was not going to work, unless I changed the stitch count - no way!

And yes, the last time I tatted a lot of the depth and it made no difference. I not sure where the problem begins.

  5. I'm glad you were able to repurpose it since the pattern didn't work for you. However, that must be super frustrating! I hope the ovals are finished soon!

  6. Ah gee, I still don't get to see a tatted hat! Glad you could find another use for it.

  7. It makes a nice trivet. Your ovals are lying nice and flat. I agree, it is going to be fiddly and will take some time to complete but hopefully it is well worth the effort.

  8. I just tried an oval and it is that very center that is fiddly I left longer thread so this is interesting.

  9. May not be a hat but at least you found another use for the tatting instead of the bin. Perhaps because you were using very thick thread that's why it did not curve. Just a thought,
Your mat looks very intricate, it's certainly a long term project, I look forward to seeing what comes next.

  10. I would have loved to see a hat and have often thought of attempting it. I do find the thick thread does tire me out as it must be "yanked" a bit harder. I wonder if the diagram is just wrong as you know it would not be the first time. Lovely Mat though.
