I seem to have the technique down, but honestly, it is difficult to work with the #80 DMC. Anybody else find it impossibly small?
Ninetta uses it almost exclusively, it seems, and has a marvellous example of how this motif should look on her post today, here. My chapeau to you, Ninetta!
Later: Arghhhhh!!!
Hi, Fox, I think it may also depend on your eyes. I am very short-sighted and I can't work with my glasses on.So, #80 looks like lace to me, and I like working with it.On pictures, and on the Internet, I like all thickness of lace, but when I hold it in my hands, I find #20, too thick, and I find#10 grotesque. But I'm aware that most people are far sighted, I will not criticize them. Everybody works at her/his best ability. Maybe the size of your hands also matter.
ReplyDeleteI only use size 80,if I have tried the pattern in a larger size first! And the perfect quilter has a better slide and unties a tad easier.
ReplyDeleteI think it depends on the day. Sometimes I have no problems, other times I wonder why I'm trying to use such tiny thread. I think your motif looks great!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a good try to me!! :)
ReplyDeleteyou have a good start going on there.
ReplyDeleteCould depend on the texture of the thread, not necessarily the size - softer threads, stiffer threads....they behave differently from each other. Sometimes it's *me* - if I'm tired, sometimes it gets difficult to work with small threads, even those I use all the time and love working with. Your wreath looks nice so far.

I absolutely love the DMC 80. I tat at least as much by feel as by sight, so I'm not bothered by the size while I'm working-- until I have to untat, and then it is a pain. It is true that some motifs simply look better in a certain size of thread. Edgings, for example, very often look best in a fine thread, I think; whereas the chunkiness of size 20 really works for certain motifs (to be honest, I think this wreath falls into the latter category).
ReplyDeleteWhenever I make this wreath, my solution is simply to not snug the chain stitches up too close to the JK's. I don't bother with making that lock join around the berries. I find that simply allowing the chains to be very slightly looser keeps them looking curved.
I agree. This is better in a larger thread. But these colours were what I had and they happen to be # 80.
Deletehello
DeleteI use a lot the DMC80 thread and I appreciate the quality of this thread
Of course, this thread is very fine and it's tiring for the eyes and I often use a magnifying glass in the evening. It is better to reserve this thread for models that we control well
When I start a difficult pattern, I take a much bigger thread
like Lizbeth # 20
Hve a nice day
Hi Fox
ReplyDeleteI avoid 80 my eye sight is not that go for fine thread, 60 is fine enough for me, Your door wreath is looking good, well done on such fine thread.
Love to Gian

I use exclusively size 80. I just like the look of the lace at this size. I do have some vision problems, but I have an excellent light so I don't experience any problems. That is until I make a mistake. Then I wonder why! I have developed a very cautious attitude about closing rings to avoid 'untatting.' which isn't as much fun as tatting.

You said it! I need to pay more attention before that final tug! : )
DeleteI like size 80, but my fave size is 50, although it's not often available unless it's HDT. At least in my corner of the world. Size 20 feels too thick in comparison, but much easier to tonk.
