#1 Motif Challenge
Mine is NOT gorgeous - yet. This is the first go 'round. Actually, I am exaggerating; this is about the fourth try at the pattern taken from D.M.C. Tatting by Therese de Dillmont (free from The Antique Pattern Library.)
I kept making all kinds of errors, and it was NOT the fault of the old pattern, which is not difficult to read at all. It's just one of those trying tats.
Having been inspired yet again by Gina and her work with Grounds lately, I am intrigued with this galoon pattern and have some plans for it after I finish the present piece. I can only do one at a time. Ah, control issues...
As did Gina, I found it difficult to keep the rings the right way around as I moved along the chain. There was some twisting that made the tatting a bit of a fiddly, stop and go situation.

This is the current project. I seem to have a fondness for beige, ecru and a minimum of thread colour these days - must be the snowy, cold influence of February's winds.
** The D.M.C. spelling for this type of trim is g-a-l-o-o-n, though it seems to be spelled in more recent years with the double consonant.
The French verb 'to braid' is galonner.
There is not much info out there on-line that I can find; I have been looking around for a while... Anyone??
Galloons... makes me think of pirates... I don't know why! I love the thread you're using, and the beads seem to be perfect for showing it off. I've pulled my antique patterns off the shelf and browsed through them, but they haven't called to me the way they have to you and Gina. I think I'll just enjoy what the two of you are doing for now!
ReplyDeleteGaloons, not DOUBLOONS, Diane! LOL!!
ReplyDeleteFox ; ))
Galloons made me think of Brigadoon! Don't know why. What IS a galloon anyway?
ReplyDeleteThe pattern also looks perfect for adding a larger bead inside the rings. Would that help to make the rings less troublesome?
The close-up of your current project is intriguing. I can't wait to see the full picture! I think it's good that you're using a neutral thread with all those brightly colored beads.
ReplyDeleteIt's looking good, Fox! Your secret project is coming along too, and I like the addition of colourful beads.
ReplyDeleteHa! Ha! I think I'll watch two movies this afternoon... Pirates of the Caribbean and Brigadoon. As I watch them, I'll look through my antique patterns. Maybe I'll get all my "oons" straight that way!
ReplyDeleteAye, Aye, Captain! : ))
ReplyDeleteA-HA! gal*loon
ReplyDelete–noun
a braid or trimming of worsted, silk or rayon tinsel, gold or silver, etc., usually having scalloping along both edges.
Well, your galloon looks marvelous! And your mystery project even more so! Neutral colors make bright sparks of color look all the more glorious and it is working to perfection in your latest project. Can't wait to see the end result!
The galoon looks really nice!
ReplyDeleteAnd the current project looks beautiful whatever it is!!! :)
the look of the first go-around is so pretty! i like it very much. i'm already thinking it would be a good wristband or bracelet. :)
ReplyDeleteThe balloons, doubloons, pantaloons - whatever they are, look GREAT! I saw the galloon pattern when Gina posted it and thought it looked interesting. I can believe it is a toughie!
ReplyDeleteBut as nice as the galloon is, I REALLY am interested in your project tease! The colors are WONDERFUL - I'm always a fan of shades of brown with splashes of color. I like the sparkle of the clear beads also.

Lovely pattern for a briad, your galloon, made me think of priates and old fashion sailing ships.
ReplyDeleteYour motif looks lovely with the beads, using a natural colour shows off the beads better.

Your tatting is just perfect, as usual.
ReplyDeleteI love D.M.C. Tatting, it's a real treasure.
I think it's funny how everyone keeps say galloon instead of galoon. You did a great job Fox!
ReplyDeleteWonderful comments, Everyone! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteFox : )
Me too! Thanks, Gina.
