Curtain Call

Maureen said something interesting in a comment yesterday...

( now is it time to pack up the needles....... ? )

At first I was irritated, then puzzled, but kept thinking about what that meant. At last, late in the day, I realized that I have been grappling with a question: why am I so determined to pursue something I am not enjoying?

The answer? Just to prove I can!

Well, that is a pretty sorry reason to carry on.

But before I left off, I decided I had to complete one entire motif, again just to prove that indeed I could, or the whole exercise would have been for naught.

So, here is my completed motif - lopsided and a bit wobbly, but at least I got the elements right.

But, if I am looking for a break from tatting, I’d rather read a book!

  1. Your needle lace looks nice to me. I tried it, got a decent 'look' to my first efforts, but did not like the overall 'shapes' made by this type of lace, so I went back to tatting. Something about the curves, ovals....the graceful 'shapes' formed by tatting....is very, very attractive to me, not to mention calming....soothing....and relaxing. But yours LOOKS nice. :-)

    1. Thanks, Bernice, but I'm afraid there is no real trailblazing here- just a little path followed till I found my shuttle and took it home!

  3. It is very pretty, I mean perfect! Maybe you shuld give it a little bit of starching to make it very well built looking ( As opposit of wobbly ).

  4. You always can take what you learn from it and use it even with tatting and other fiber arts, I was into sewing and have used things I learned from threads and fabric on tatting too. I love your doily even a bit uneven I love the natural look and you got way further than I did. Trying this made me want to try point lace.

  5. At least you've tried! Now you can say that you've given it a go and you're not interested any more... until another design strikes your fancy! ;-)

    1. Ah, Nin - it really isn’t very pretty, but I’m glad it got finished! Small rewards are very satisfying. : )

  7. My first thoughts were that it looks lovely and you had done a good job, you tried and although you were not happy with it, it's better to try than never try.
if you had never tried you would have been left wondering if you could have made it.
    Love to Mr G

  8. I think it turned out well. I understand about pursuing something you don’t enjoy just to see that you can do it—that’s how I felt about tatting at first, but something made me keep coming back. :)

  9. Did you actually buy a book or just use internet sources? I have looked around for books, but I am not sure what would be a good one. Have you looked at this one?

I wonder whether you would dig yours out again, if I started?
