Polished Off The Ovals

Using these, which I am learning to use...

I have finished the twelve ovals.
Now to attach them to the main piece.

The gauges take some getting used to, and I have to admit
they do make tatting look more consistent and symmetrical.

This is unblocked, but you can see lovely regular picots...

And the cap... hmmmm. Not cupping very much.

This will not be for the baby, but may very well fit The Boss.
If it does work, I will order some #20 and will
attempt a smaller version for the little one.

Maybe.

  2. I have to admit, those picots look lovely, but using a gauge on every picot would drive me insane. I refuse to use one except for long picots that need to be a specific length for the design to work. BUT, on a pattern like this, I can imagine that using a gauge for the bare thread spaces between rings could be helpful.

It's hard to tell in the photo, but I think I do see a slight cuppage to the cap. I really do think, though, that the crown is meant to be a little on the flatter side, and that you will start to see it cup more when you get to the outer rows. Carry on!

  3. Hang in there. I suspect it may not cup much - maybe not at all - until you are close to (or even ON) the final round(s). It looks lovely. If it doesn't fit The Boss, it should fit in a few years. Kids grow FAST!!!
The oval looks nice, too, even unblocked/unpressed. We can block/press it in our imaginations. :-)

  4. Elegant gauges, elegant tatting. Like Miranda, I only use a gauge for bare spaces and very long picots, with the result that my picots are not as regular and beautiful as yours.

    1. The picots on the outer row are actually too large! I am determined to become friendly with a gauge and the one I used was the best size of the lot. I probably will not use a gauge all the time, but I want to be proficient when I do need one.

The picots are pretty consistent, but I would not call them elegant! Too big. You are very kind, indeed! : ))

  5. I love the gauges - they would be so helpful for those items with lots of picots. I can't quite get the hang of them - but haven't been my usual persistent self either.

It will be interesting to see when that cap starts to cup - maybe it will just be very gradual :)

  6. Love those gauges! I wonder if they're available in the U.S. yet? I'll have to check. I'm guessing you ordered them directly from Japan... you're always two steps ahead of me! ;-)

  9. What fancy looking picot gauges! And yes, your picots certainly look very consistent… perfect even! But like Miranda, I'd never have the patience to use one for every single picot… although I probably would for the bare threads in your ovals (did you use one?)

And how strange that we ended up taking a photo of our cap-in-progress nearly exactly at the same spot (three chains of the 7th round for you and four for me!)

  10. (sorry should have said 6th round, not 7th… an unimportant detail though)...
