Thinking...Planning...

This is coming along, but obviously I have done something wrong, as the border edges are curved, instead of straight... I am considering redoing this.

Now, here's what I am thinking about...

Design by Ben Frikkert
Tatted by Sherry Townsend

I am trying to track down the book, as it is out if print. Today I sent an email to Ben Frikkert, so I'll keep you posted.

If I can get hold of it, I would like to begin it in March. Hopefully, by then, I will be finished with the two I am working on.
Anyone care to join me?

  1. It looks ok to me, but I am wondering if blocking would straighten things out?? :)
Love the other one and hope you can find the pattern!! :)

    1. Yes, I am wondering that now that the row is nearly complete...I think the next row might allow for the curve to straighten with blocking. Thanks.

  2. Yes, I would love to join you. I talked with someone who purchased one like this and maybe this one because the colors are the same. She was looking for the pattern as well. Sure hope you can find it! I will start searching Monday.

  4. Fox,
I am on the final round of the JS Doily. Don't worry too much about the curving in the centre. Mine was like that too. I pressed the doily as I worked the subsequent rounds and it straightened itself.

That Ben Fikkert doily is amazing. Will be following your search of the pattern and your tatting of it.

    1. Hi, Jon, Yes, I see it is becoming less curved as I tat the last row of the chains. Thanks. I am relieved as it is pretty repetitive and I really did not want to start all over again!

I wonder how many balls of thread you used.

I am finishing my first one and have 2 more balls of #60 DMC Cordonnet. Hoping it is enough.

    2. Fox, I almost used up one 20gm ball of size 60 milford mercer for this doily. I am halfway through the final round and I think I may have enough to finish the doily. If you know the grammage of the DMC #60, you should be able to approximate the amount of thread you may need for the whole doily, since we are using the same thread size.

    3. Thanks, Jon. I have almost used one ball of 20 grams, but have had a ....few, ummm....mistakes! For sure, I will use 2 balls!

  6. I'm relieved you won't have to re-do it! I was thinking that you'd have to know where you'd gone wrong before you started over. Love the other doily. I did promise myself I wouldn't make more big doilies because I don't know what to do with them, but I could be tempted....

  7. There's nothing I enjoy more than a good book hunt - I will search with you! I have the book, but of course cannot share the pattern - which I always think is such a shame, because if you were here, I would happily lend you the book!

    1. Hi, Margaret,
Yes, I recall the email, but forget the pattern you mentioned. At the time I was so overloaded with the two I am tatting, I thought I couldn't handle one more! Are you up to the Frikkert pattern, should I be able to track it down?

  10. I think the Stawasz doily looks pretty with the curved lines! This is a bit late, but I am very impressed with the monster you completed last year! It is absolutely beautiful. If I remember correctly, Ben's doily is one of my (very many) WIPs. Maybe you will inspire me to pull it out this year. Happy new year!

  11. Your doily is coming along nicely, & the other doily is spectacular, too .... no wonder you want to make it :-) Hope you get the pattern.

  13. I've been looking for the book with that Ben Fikkert pattern in it, also. If you find it (it's out of print), please let us all know where to get a copy. Depending on whether I have finished a major project (with a sort of 'deadline' of 'summer') by March, I may be able to join in on the huge Fikkert (if I can get the pattern, that is).

  14. I'm glad to hear it's straightening itself out. I often find that if something looks "not quite right", but I've double-checked and I'm sure I've tatted it right, then simply joining on the next bit will fix it.

However, even if it doesn't become completely straight, I don't think it matters. It looks like it's just a matter of a slight tension difference between you and Jan. The outside edges look pretty straight to me, so it shouldn't affect the rest of the doily; and the curves along the inside edge are simply an interesting variation, not something wrong. What a boring world it would be if everyone's tatting looked like everyone else's!

    1. The next rows seem to have corrected it.

Though individuality is fine, when I want something to look like the way it was designed, I REALLY want it to appear so! Otherwise... trucker-talk abounds.
