Wrongly Revising Renulek

There I was - tatting away on that EASY, SIMPLE, UNCOMPLICATED and especially STRAIGHTFORWARD sixth row of Lato 2014, and this is what happened...

THIS is what Renulek designed:

Hmmmm. I don’t feel like cutting it off and I rather like it, so my tendency is to just leave it and see if I can incorporate it properly with the 7th row. What do you think?

In a moment of boredom, I decided to practice things I have not touched in a while, namely clunies and Maltese rings. I should have left well-enough alone!

The cluny pattern is by Marie Smith.

  1. I almost did the same thing on the 6th row. I don't know what comes next, but I think you can make it work as long as the number of picots on that 6th row are the same as in the original.

Brave indeed - Clunies and Maltese rings! I tend to avoid patterns with many Clunies - after 2 or 3 of them, I get knots instead of nice, smooth, woven 'leaf' shapes. Maltese rings are a bit fiddly, but they take a bit of review if a pattern uses them - for all of us.

I love the colors you've used on the 'summer' napkin.

  2. Hmmm, the ring on ring looks a little awkward but it may turn out to be something beautiful. I feel it is too early for purple but again, I may be wrong.

Cluny leaves - I am afraid of them. Another one is roll tatting, can't do them.

    Lovely pattern from Marie.

    1. Afraid of them! I did laugh at that! Like Mr. G being “afraid” of catnip - which he is!!!

  3. Your doily looks good and as long as the picots are in the same place the next row should work(I would think)!!! :)
I think your clunies look really good for not doing them in awhile!! :)

  4. Don't cut it, it looks lovely just as it is - great colours. Clunies - no!! - but I can do Maltese rings......

  5. I feel better knowing seasoned tatters don't have perfect cluny skills. I clunied my brains out for about a month, and at that point, I told myself I was going to quit tatting if I didn't quit the cluny.

    The clunies won. For now.

  6. Ooh, I love the cluny pattern. I'm thinking Marie has done more work on clunies than you have, but you'd get there! If you can incorporate your 'mistaken' row with the next, great, carry on. There's no law that says yours must be identical with Renulek's!

  7. I like those rings on rings and your colors are amazing as usual. Maybe you added a little extra space that won't affect the next row, I'm looking forward to see what Renulek has planned... Lovely cluny motif, the leaves are a challenge, I can't tat more than 4 or 5 at a time, otherwise mine start changing shape and consistency. A little rest between or changing project between groups of cluny leaves, that helps me. Hugs.

  8. Love the experiment in your lab today :) and the blue and ecru attracts. That big maltese in the right hand side under flower is my favorite :)

  9. I made a mistake in the second round. I decided to go forward. I guess I will soon learn if that will work or not.

  10. It looks like you have the same # of chains & picots. There is NO WAY I'd cut that off.

  11. I like your doily. I say leave it and see what happens.

  12. Even with your use of color for the different rounds, it took me a little while to realize that you added the extra thrown-off rings on the green round! It will be interesting to see how the next round works out! Looks like all the picots are there! I don't even attempt clunies, although I admire the designs that can be created with them.

  13. Nothing wrong with a bit of impro Fox! As long as you like it, that's what counts. And of course, as long as it doesn't change the shape too much so that the following rows are not affected. Clunies are difficult! I use to make them in bobbin lace and there too I found it hard to get the perfect leaf shape I was after. Not easy to get that nice smooth edge to them.

  14. Hi Fox

I think I might leave it if it works out ok with the next row.
Not tried Clunies, They look difficult I will try one day when I have time to play.

  15. Poor Mr G, why do you give him catnip?
I made a mistake at the beginning of Renukel's row 4, and cut everything away. My only consolation, is that this sometimes also happens to you.
    Your blog comforts people!

  16. As the others have said earlier, leave that round as it is since all the necessary picots appear to be there.
I have not tried clunies before. Maybe I will when I feel like adding it to my designs. Until then, I will continue to admire tatters who have acquired the skill to tat them.
