The Reveal

Wow -  I cannot believe it is done! And done with 190 beads in the final round. I ever delighted I got through it; it was sure touch and go at times.

The final size is just over 11 inches in diameter, tatted in #40 Cébélia.

This Mystery Doily is quite an interesting challenge for anyone bored with the usual fare in the realm of tatting patterns. It is very repetitive, and the pattern can be memorized easily, but careful attention must be paid to every repeat, or there is a lot of un-tatting to do. Believe me on this point!

Thanks for all the the support, tatters, especially Jon and Frivole, who put up with a lot of groaning and panicky emails; they gave me much-needed help along the way.

  1. Well Done! You did great at persevering. Did you have to block it at all?
Why am I not surprised at the addition of beads in the last round?
I am about one-third left to do of the final round.

    1. I washed it as it was rather filthy! There was so much adding thread and cutting and twisting, so I felt a wash in warm soapy water would clean it and tighten it up.

Then when I lay it flat I saw it did not need any blocking or anything!. It dried snd was just fine.

  4. It looks terrific! So different from the run-of-the-mill patterns. It's a very dense design with a lot of stitches. Of course nobody ever doubted you would finish it. But you certainly deserve congratulations on getting through it.

  5. Warmest congratulations!!! That really was a mission, but well worth the effort involved. I do like the beads around the edge.

  6. Wow!! Stunning doily. Your perseverance paid off. Although the tatting is dense, not a lot of negative space, it still looks very light and airy. Congratulations!!

  7. Dearest , Fox, I am speechless,.......;.......Wow, wow wow!!!!
Ok , I can breathe again. I suggest that you, Jon and Frivole write a book together with history, pattern, tips, and your feelings as you were tatting this mystery.
You allowed an ancient idea to travel through time, and wear a new beautiful dress!! This is the cinderella among the doilies!

Well done!! BIG KISS (I can't help it)

  10. Fox, what is the weight of your newborn? I'm serious, I'd like to know.

  11. Tally Tatty,
I used over 1 ball of Cèbèlia, but made so many mistakes and wasted thread, so I guess the weight would be about the same as one ball, that being 50 grams.

  15. Stunning! Gorgeous! Amazing! Where will it go now?

  16. I agree with Tally Tatty - collate everyone's comments and ideas and perhaps send it to Georgia to store with the pattern in the online site! It's a too valuable body of knowledge to be left to linger down the years in people's blogs.
And once again, hasn't it been Worth the Effort? - because it's beautiful, it would look wonderful on my table.......

  22. I am in awe of the completed doily! I've liked the pattern since I first saw it when it was initially posted on Georgia's site, however I don't think I made it past the first round. Seeing yours may just inspire me to find my WIP and at least start working on it. Really stunning piece!
