Courting The Collar

Remember I spoke about the tatting on Justice Bader Ginsberg's robes? Well I was inspired and this is be result.

This was a relaxing tat, except for a minor inconvenience caused by the #10 Cèbèlia that I used.

Should you try this pattern, count the repeats carefully and make sure that you pay attention to the end chains. I had to fake it for I had counted the wrong number of repeats initially and also the number of picots on the chains around the corners. Easy to do, especially with my particular spatial interpretations!

Therefore, I had to ...ummm... fake it, to get the right result.

Wendy (who by chance is tatting the same pattern!) suggested that I did not have to follow the pattern and could change the size of the thread. Well, I often do make adjustments, but in this case, I wanted the collar to look exactly the same as the one in Jan Stawasz's pattern, so I bought a ball of  #10 thread.

Thread??
More like hemp!
Rubbed the skin right off my finger!

  1. Looks fabulous, Fox. The design very clearly shown on a dark background. It will look stunning on a dark colour dress or blouse.
Your poor finger unfortunately took the brunt. Would it have helped with a softer size 10 thread?

    1. Cebelia is all that is available locally and I just could not face ordering a #10 from the Internet and paying the horrid shipping charges. Thus, the Cebelia. It wasn’t that bad as I tatted it for it did not feel that harsh. But there is a lot more pulling and fiddling with heavy thread and that is where the chafing happened. I was not aware of it at the beginning.

  2. wow that is awful about your finger. But "no pain no gain" the color is very nice it seem like the larger the thread the harder on my hands it is to work with!

  3. Wow! What a gorgeous collar! Sorry about your finger, but . . . but . . . just LOOK at that collar! Wowza! I've always wondered how they are worn. Do they get sewn on to stay through washing and all . . . or are they affixed in such a way that they come off for the wash? ? ? (Letting my ignorance show . . . sorry! ;)

  4. Now try it in sewing thread! It's a lovely collar, and I would never have guessed what it was, all scrunched up in the earlier picture.
Which shuttle did you use for size 10? - that interests me.

    1. Thanks, Maureen. I used the only shuttles I now have - LaCossette shuttles, which are the Aerlits. This necessitated a lot of refills, but it is very easy to sew in ends with #10 thread.

  5. Very pretty! I completely understand, that's why I never use size 10.

  7. Beautiful! Very nicely done...it is absolutely stunning! I, too, would love to see Justice Ginsburg wearing that!!! It would look incredibly elegant! I have a tatted collar Grandma did for me years and years ago...had a lovely sweater I wore it with at one point. The sweater wore out of course, while the tatted collar is still perfection itself. I should post pictures of it sometime soon.

  8. Lovely collar, Fox! My answer to Willow is that I have collars sewn firmly to blouses that have been through the wash many times.

  9. Very pretty! I used to crochet tons of collars and give them as gifts. I got too hot when I wore them. However, if I ever tat one, I think I just might keep it. I don't like working with size 10 at all any more, not even for crochet. You're right... it is very hard on the hands!

  12. Cebelia is some of the softest #10 thread around, so if you had trouble with it, I think it's the #10-ness of it, not so much the thread.

    The collar is really beautiful!

    1. Thanks, Mags. I know! I used Cèbèlia for the Trellis pattern and many other things and it is very enjoyable to tat with, if a bit soft. It is #10 that is the problem, not the brand. : )
