Gearing Up...

Not sure what I am gearing up to tat, but nothing is calling out to me, so I tatted a few things that just seem to appeal for no reason.

This first one is from Aunt Ellen’s Treasury of Tatting (Workbasket Patterns, with no designers stated) and I have tatted it before with some difficulty if I remember correctly. This time? No probemo!

I used Olympus leftovers. #40.

The next one is the beginnings of an oval vintage pattern that I really  messed up using ”Knitty Gritty", #40, from Yarnplayer.  There was no diagram and I could not see the joins in the photo, as it was so small, so I wasted a bunch of this delicious hand-dyed thread.

In the end, I did give up on this one, for I found I did not like the pattern after all, and it was fairly large.

There is enough left for a small project I am tatting now, however.

While reading through the blogs, this caught my eye, here. Monica was talking about the trip her shuttles made to Machu Picchu and my son is about to leave for his trip to Peru.

I mailed him the link to Monica’s post and asked if he might take a tatted something along with him. His suggestion was - get this - that I send a few and maybe a shuttle, so he could give it to the community! His words. : )) Did I raise a good child, or what!!!

So, I looked for some small motifs to send and there isn’t much left, but I am finding bits and pieces that I shall wrap up as the day gets closer. What a lovely idea.

Speaking of tatting tins, this is mine. This is where all the finished stuff goes till I find a home for it or donate some to The Boss to add to her”artwork.”

The other day, when I was looking for something to send with my son, I noticed the little red fox on the tin - I had never seen it before.

My mom gave me this tin before she passed away and it is odd I did not notice the fox then. Now it has taken on new meaning; I really am glad I have it now.

I looked up the Latin (thinking of Michelle!) and it means “A skin for a skin” and is the official motto (adopted in 1670) for The Hudson's Bay Company! Well!

  1. That's a beautiful story, on both counts; your son's suggestion for his trip, and, more especially, your treasured Tatting Tin. I think your mother knew very well that the fox was there when she gave it to you, don't you? - which somehow makes it doubly precious. What were you thinking about, when you finally noticed it? - it's almost as though a film must have fallen from your eyes at a significant moment.
    I found this goose-bumpy stuff.

    1. Me too, Maureen! I don’t know why I never saw it before and it just sort of jumped out at me out of nowhere!

  2. What an adorable tin.

With the Aunt Ellen motif, I wonder, could this be done with daisy picots instead of RW for rings. I guess the chains would be replaced with a large ring, with the lavender thread carried inside till neded for the daisy stitches.

  4. Wow! I LOVE the purple and green together! Knitty Gritty is one of my favorite colors, and I'm happy to say I still have some left. I am totally addicted to hand-dyed thread. Luckily, I have what many would consider to be a lifetime supply!

Isn't it fabulous that your son is willing to be a tatting ambassador? Maybe he should take a tatting lesson or two before he leaves so that he can show how it's done! ;-)

The tin is wonderful! Maybe you could come up with a tatting motto for all of us!

  5. The tatted motifs are just beautiful. The first motif in purple and green is so eye catching. I love it.

Your son has a great idea. Diane too.

  6. What a fun tin and that first motif is wonderful.

The motto really says a "skin/pelt" for the "(human)skin".

Your son sounds like a real gem. Not surprising.

    1. Michelle, I actually saw that translation, but I felt it needed explanation, so I went with the simpler version... Thanks for noticing!

  7. what a cute and appropriate tin.
I like your purple and green motif. Another Fox keeper. The small oval motif would work as a bookmark if you added a tail. or mount it to a headband for one of the girls.
Sounds like you have a good son.

  8. Great idea for you son to take some tatting with him! I love the tin story, how funny that you didn't notice the fox before. I'll have to take another look at my tin, which was originally a gift of fudge from friends in England.

  10. I know I've already commented, but I have to say that I really like your top motif. Love the colours you've used, and the unusual look of it. I keep seeing it on the blog rolls and think, ooh, that's pretty!

  12. Hi Fox

Love the motif, and beautiful in those tow colours.
I am sure your mum gave you the tin with meaning, the fox must have been there so she meant you to have it and it something very precious to keep. It's also a very useful item to keep your finish tatting in.
Lovely story about your son I hope he enjoys his trip to Peru, it's an interesting country, he might even ring you back some thread
    Love to Gian

  13. Well! I really do love the first motif - it's just stunning all by itself. And your son sounds just as wonderful as you - great idea. I would love to hear about his trip to Peru - what an interesting place to go. The reaction of whomever receives the tatting would be interesting as well.

The fox on the tin is quite special. I bet your mom is relieved that you've finally noticed :)

  15. I did take another look at my tin, and it says Jubilee fudge, "This product has been created to celebrate The Queen's Diamond Jubilee.....It features the Queen's Beasts, mythical creatures from the Coats of Arms of the monarch's ancestors". No foxes, but it makes me think of you because you wrote about the Jubilee just the other day.

  16. Zing, zing! Love that purple and green! And that tin is so perfect... amazing that you'd not noticed the fox... he's so cute as well sitting proudly on his regal red crown, totally unbothered by the moose! I love tin boxes and this one is very special.
