Salmon Pink and Ivory

I have begun the new piece: a Jan Statwsz doily.

Being a glutton for punishment, I am using Finca #8, as it is easily available in a local shop. I chose ( from a limited selection of colour) a salmon pink. The top picture is too pink; the actual colour is close to the bottom colour.

Finca 8 is fuzzy and 2 ply, but works up to a rather dense fabric, close to between a #20 and a #10 Lizbeth. I like the bulk of it for Jan’s patterns, as he works in a heavy thread. I have one of his pieces, a small motif and I really like the feel of it. His work is very tightly tatted, but in a softer thread than Lizbeth.

I had considered ordering a Lizbeth, but it is just too rough to me, and the Cebelia that is available in a shop here is not right either - too bland in colour and not the right texture, so fuzzy Finca it is

The constant reloading of thread drove me nuts while tatting the Honey Napkin, so to avoid insanity, I have 2 shuttles on order at the local shop: 2 plastic Boyes!

I must have something larger than my constant companions, the lovely LaCossettes, as tatting only the small centre motif of this new pattern emptied the bobbins!

The Starlits are too big for me as are Tatsys, and I do not like the nasty point on the Sew Mates. Having used Boyes before, I think I can cope... We shall see!

  1. http://entrelanzaderas.blogspot.com/2010/10/clases-de-frivolite-tatting-lessons.html can put you in touch with the lady who makes her wood shuttles. They seem to hold a similar amount to the sewmates, and they are pretty!

    1. Thanks, Susie. I know those are beautiful shuttles, but the Boyes are cheap and cheerful and right around the corner from my place! No shipping fees!

  2. Have you tried the sewmates without the pick? I love mine, and I normally like the aeros too.

    1. Hi, Lisa,
Yes, a couple if years ago. I forgot about these. Might just do if I cannot abide the Boyes. Thanks!

  4. Interesting! I hope you find the right thread for tatting the Stawasz patterns. These days I cannot live without my sewmate pointed shuttles.

    1. These Finca threads are indeed the ones I am using! This is the actual beginning of the piece.

  5. Love the colour - but the Boyes just don't match your thread, how will you cope?

  6. I can't wait to see your progress on this piece! The two colors are lovely - are you planning on adding any more colors as you progress? The Boye shuttles are good for holding a lot of thread. They're not my favorite to use, but will do at times.

    1. Hi, Mica,
No - these are the only colours I will use

I am glad you said that about the Boye shuttles. I am hoping that they “do” for this project. I expect nothing else of them but to hold a lot of thread!

  8. That is going to be very pretty when you finish. Those colors are looking just right.
The center has a nice look to it.

  9. What a wonderful start.

I learned how to tat with an original red Boye shuttle. I still pick it up from time to time.

Last night I used a Lacis/Sew mate as shuttle one, and the new, kinda larger Clover as shuttle two. I think the Sew mate/Lacis and Clover ones are the same size, I did prefer the tip on the Clover - seemed I was more used to that tip. (would be nice if the price dropped a bit, too)

    Enjoy the day

    1. Thanks, Margaret. There are about 9 rows but the thread is thick. I think this will be about 12 inches, but I could be way off.
