Successful Scallops

#91

Martha left a helpful comment about the edging: "Make the picots smaller," she said, and I did.

The result is a much more shapely edge.  I was attempting to achieve the scalloped effect that the book displays.

I do not crochet for a reason.  After years with the hook in my hand, I became supremely bored with it, and also tended to get a mightily sore wrist - which made trucker-mouth arrive promptly on cue!

It was time to move on. Fortunately, in timely fashion, tatting made its appearance.

Now, my wrists are fine.  Unfortunately, trucker-mouth just moved camp...

#1 was the first one I tatted - pretty but no distinct border.

#2 is the same centre, but I cut off the original border and crocheted it with crossed stitches at the beginning of the curved chains, hoping the scalloped edge would emerge.  It did not. Also, I sliced through picots while removing the edge, and had to re-tat the whole thing. Bahh.

#3 is the last motif before I added the crocheted edging.  The picots are just about half the size.

I dare you to tat this without a picot gauge!

p.s.  This is my 700th post!

  1. It's wonderful Fox! I love it. I don't think I'd try it to begin with, all those picots would drive me mad!

  4. Hallo Fox, congrats to your post #700!!!! And this little egg #4 is soo nice and perfectly looking!!! You did it so well! I also love the dark colorcombination of #3! Thank you for inspiring me, I am getting eager to try this out with shuttle and needle. I assume needle is quicker this time for me, possible without gauge ;-))Happy sunday!

  5. Beautiful! I love the look of that egg and can't wait to make it. Did you make the first and last picot of each scallop a tad smaller or all the same size? I wonder if that would help the scalloping.

    1. JB, It sure would! But too fiddly with taking that gauge into account. Not my cuppa! But go for it - it would work well. See comment by Ladytats.

  6. pretty tatting as always Fox. I am never sure why you pick your work apart like you do. perfection is a goal, but still you do such pretty work. as for tatting this one, to get the scallops, I would make the picots graduated in each section. Which would require the use of several picot gauges instead of just one. more fiddly then I would want for such a quick project. but that is just me.
wow!! 700 posts, good for you! I am only up to 239.
congratulations. I check your blog constantly to see what you have done. I am inspired, wish I had more time.

    1. Yikes - that would be so much work! And I am not sure if the crocheting would work with so many changes... ai must admit I did have that thought too, but discarded it pretty quickly!

    1. The patterns are small and challenging. That is why I tat them - I am not partial to eggs either!

  13. Well congratulations! Not only on the 700th post, but also on having the nerve to tackle that egg -- I would have tried it once, maybe, but you've done it over and over and it looks better every single time. I really love the colors in egg 3.

  15. Congratulations on your 700th post. Your egg is super cool.

And as usual your post made me smile. If not before, I imagine #2 was where the "trucker-mouth" came in, it sure would have if it was me :-)

  18. Very nice! That pink is so bright though that I can barely look at it without needing to squint! :) I can't crochet anymore either, but I never really liked crocheting with thread. Strange then that I'm so addicted to tatting...

  20. I have to sooooo do this one now! I love it! I'm still working on that Chained Heart. Grrrrr...that's all I have to say about that. ;)

  21. I wonder if most tatters would rather be challenged and risk not having a perfect outcome everytime or would they like a pattern that always turns out perfect? That last egg is amazing.
