'Milky Way' Mojo

#22-100 Motif Challenge
Here is another of Jon's Snowflakes, this one from her first book.  Oooh, I LOVE this one! I tatted it with Cébélia, #30, black and ecru.  Lovely combination and a nice change from all the fuzzy stuff.

I did not used to enjoy Cébélia, but now I like it very much in the #30 size.  Such a fickle heart has this tatter.

Lately, I have narrowed my thread preferences to four that I now enjoy the most: Cébélia, #30, DMC #80,  Lizbeth #40 and Finca #12 - not in any particular order.

What is your thread of choice - aside from all the beautiful had dyed threads out there in Tatland?

I had started to tat this in the Valdani, but I kept making mistakes and could KNOT undo them!

I think this would have been very pretty, but it was not worth the loss of hair ...

  1. LOL!! Yes, please keep your hair!

Lovely snowflake, really like the colors you chose...

About the threads you like best... If I recall correctly, I remember reading several posts earlier this year about how much you HATED Lizbeth.... It does have it's Cons, with that I agree. But it also has a good side (knots slide easily, knots are easily un-picked,etc). Glad you were able to come to a love/hate relationship with the brand (LOL)

Have you tried Hakelgarn? I decided to get that brand one time, and I've been a fan ever since. They don't have a wide color selection though, but the ones they do have are pretty.

  2. It's really interesting how the beads seem to change the color of the white/ecru thread. Lovely motif. I like the valdani piece but have never tatted with it- I'm sorry it's such a stinker to work with.

  3. My go-to threads if I want to tat something for keeps are anything in 6-ply such as the DMC#80 and the Olympus thread, followed by the Lizbeth, which I prefer the #40 more than the #20. I have yet to try the Lisbeth #80 so I can't really say much there. The other 6-ply thread that I like is the Hakelgarn but as Lily said, there isn't many colour choices there.

I use the 3-ply thread for try-outs when I work on new designs. I don't like tatting with 3-ply thread so much so I don't feel bad if I need to just cut it off when a design doesn't work.

  4. Very very striking. Love the combination of black and ecru. I must try this colour combination. The Valdani colour is very attractive too. I like my LiZbeTH.

  5. Very nice. I like how the black 'frames' the rest. I think the Valdani color would have worked up well too. I really need to give the Valdani thread a try to see if I like it or not.

  7. Cebelia is my favorite thread to tat with! It just seems to have a bit of "tooth" to it that keeps the stitches nicely in place, yet it closes rings smoothly.

  8. I find that I enjoy tatting in sizes 30 and 40 most. I'm not even sure the brand matters. Size 12 and finca 16 are very similar to 40 so maybe it's the size that matters more. What? Size matters?

  10. Altin Basak has been my favorite for quite a while. I love Flora (any size) and Manula in size 20. Love the colors of Magestic size 80 treads. Lizbeth has definitely been growing on my. I usually don't like such a "crisp" thread, but I LOVE the colors, and especially love that the colors match in all sizes. I don't use variegated thread very often, but I really appreciate the fact that the variates match the solids. It's a detail that I appreciate even if I don't use it much.

  11. Oh, I also love the colorways on Koigu yarn. Yes, I've been playing with tatting with yarn and if you can keep yourself from tatting too tight it works pretty well with the Koigu. I have some Vavaldi, but haven't tried it yet. I suspect it will be similar.

  12. I love Lizbeth 40 and 80. I have lots of the 20 but that's because that's what they carry at Hobby Lobby. I did however buy some Star size 70 on Etsy and I love it.
