White... Right?

I am going to tat the border in #30 white Cébélia, as that is what I have on hand, and that is what is called for in Frivlole's beautiful 'Iris' pattern.

What do you think?  Should it be white or yellow or green? I COULD make a small concession and order a #30 if I really need to do it in a colour... hmmmmm.

Here is my mom's hankie and this one is going to be MY heirloom piece.  It has lily-of-the-valley flowers on it, at least I think that's what they are, and it is in better shape than the last one, (for sis) as it washed up really white, with no marks but for one teeny one. Like the other one, this is very sheer.

What to do.... what to do....

  1. FOx, yo me inclino por el blanco, es más representativo del encaje antiguo y luce mejor. Besos

  2. white or green if you are going with one solid color. However, I think a variegated green would look quite nice. Yellow would not be my pick. I love the lilies on this, they are lovely

  3. I am a newish follower and relatively new tatter (one month of tatting as of yesterday) and though I have enjoyed reading your blog and others, I have never ventured a comment before, but really wanted to say that white seems very right...but perhaps with a few colored beads as you did with the Queen of Hearts pattern you posted yesterday to make it yours and to pick up the accent colors on that beautiful hankie...

  4. I think it depends on the shade of the color.

    First choice: Pale yellow
    Second: White

Really though, it seems that I can see the text (in my mind) from someone that told me I should choose what I want ;-P ... sound familiar? lol

  5. Hi Fox

I think a soft yellow would look nice or variegated green but I love all greens. Take care.

  6. White, definitely white. But it would not surprise me if you come up with something totally different and still make a smashing border. White, with pale green beads maybe? Whatever you pick: it will be great; it is in safe hands with you!

  7. I like a border to be a different color from the main color of what it's being attached to; I think it looks more "finished" that way. To me, a white border on white fabric looks like a sentence without a period

I do have to admit that pure white has a kind of freshness to it, especially if you can keep it clean. OTOH, green has a nice vitality, while pale yellow can be soothing.

I'm a color-loving kind of person at heart, and I would go with a green thread if it were my project. Yarnplayer's "Leafy" comes to mind.

The bottom line is each color choice is going to create a different mood. You have to decide what you want to "say" with this hanky and choose a color based on that.

  8. Le blanc serait très chic et la fantaisie serait queques perles d'un vert tendre....
Mais votre choix sera très joli...

  10. It depends, I think, on what you want to emphasize......white for the flowers, a nice varigated green to showcase the leaves, or a white to pale yellow will pick up the flowers and stamens. White is classic. It's a beautiful hanky!

  12. Julie, Thanks for commenting!

And congratulations on your first month of tatting!

I love the idea of beads... I hadn't considered it for this hankie for some reason. You have me thinking!

  13. Your lily of the valley hanky is beautiful! I would go with either white or variegated green. White would be my first choice, because it wouldn't detract from the flowers. I can hardly wait to see what you do!

  14. It has to be white; otherwise the flowers will be diminished.
Cheer yourself up with some tiny crystals along the way!

  15. I think white as it wont detract from the flowers and it would look really delicate!

  16. Another one already :) Can't wait to see how it turns out.

  17. The hanky is beautiful. I would choose white because it will make it look so elegant. Can you match the hanky with your mother's personality? If she is very regal, I would use white. If she is more of the vivacious type, I would use green.

  18. Have you decided already?
I would chose white for the same reason that Maureen has stated.

  19. You will probably think I am feverish or worse, but I would run with the previous comment for white thread and cheerful beads.

This coming from a tatter who loes color no less! But I agree that those lovely embroidered lillies of the valley are simply to pretty not to take center stage.

  20. Hey Fox!
I'd go with white. In this handkerchief's case, I would want to showcase the embroidery. White tatting would set a lovely stage for it without drawing too much attention away from it.

  21. Such a pretty hanky Fox! I'm delighted you will be using my border for it. Seems from reading the previous messages that white has the most votes. I think I would vote white too or perhaps a pale yellow... as you've just made a white border, perhaps you fancy a change? Personally I think green would be too much of a contrast for such a delicate hanky. Just my two cents. Can't wait to see what you choose!
