Amber Beads - Thanks,Mom

#24 Motif Challenge

"Mixed Bouquet," from A Pattern Book of Tatting, by Mary Konior.

I had tried this once before here, but I had more fun tatting in the larger, #20 thread (though the green is  #40 Milford, probably distorting the pattern somewhat!)

The amber beads are from my mom, who is not overly keen on tatting, though she does get mega points on the praise that she manages to muster, plus she honestly does try to show an active interest in my passion.  She gets a lot of praise for that!

A few days ago she was excited to gave me these beads; she thought I could use them.  They are from an eyeglass lanyard that had broken and she to salvaged the beads.  I am impressed!

So, I had to show my appreciation.  She will not want to keep this piece; she will 'ooh' and 'ahhh' over it before she puts it very solidly  back into my hands - and that is okay!

Next: all shuttles loaded and ready to tat!

The white beads are another bead-rescue.  Mom got these from a gift, a  beaded eyeglass case that had started to shed the beads.  They are white and opalescent.  Small and very pretty.  Ready to put to good use...

  1. Your post is amusingly honest. I love the salvaged beads for you to tat with. Happy tatting...

  2. I admire all of your beaded pieces! I know I have loads of beads stashed away. I just haven't been in the mood to take the plunge.

Tatting has taken a back seat for the past hour... I've started knitting a pair of socks. They seem much warmer than a tatted doily!

  3. Hmmm, you must be working on multiple projects at a time, since the post after this one has a lovely motif with amber beads.

What "lello" project is in the works? (That is, if you are telling?)

  4. Very nice! And the new string of beads there looks very pretty too! :)

  5. You know, I think beads that have a history are the best! I love knowing who made the beads (like lampworked beads) or what kind of personal item and to whom it belonged on reclaimed beads. I have some jewelry of my mother's that I dearly want to incorporate in my lace somehow. There is one pair of earrings in particular, with an oval red sparkly bead in the center and silver filagree as the base. They are clip earrings. I plan to make each into a brooch or pendant, one for me and one for my sister. I just haven't quite thought up the right pattern yet.

  6. Isdihara, I am confused! I am a "serially monogamous tatter," as I get jumpy if I have more than one thing going at a time!

The amber beads are in the Mary Konior. The pic on the bottom has just been started AFTER the Konior one was finished last night!

That tat, with the pearly white beads and the 'lello' ones will be the next post. Thanks for the visit and for making me think!

  7. We Moms can be an odd lot! I know, I bristled when my youngest said, “Mom has a craft!” I don’t know, craft doesn’t cut it with me. Kraft is a kit, or something made from popsicle sticks. Nothing wrong with crafts but I think it is the ‘art’ of tatting ~ making lace. Actually, I don’t think of any of the fiber arts as crafts. JMHO. LOL On the other hand, she prizes that table runner so much that she bought an expensive hanger, blocked the piece herself and has it as a hanging in her dining room! She doesn’t call it a craft any longer; at least, not in my presence. tee hee

  8. I think your mother is lovely! - actively supporting your addiction to beads - my family would unanimously prefer that I stick to my knitting - for which I have lost the inclination, I have to say. I keep saying that yes, tatting isn't really "useful", but it brings me pleasure. So I was incredibly touched when the most vocal of the knitting-pushers gave me a whole box full of thread for Christmas!

  9. Fox,

Aren't mothers great!? It sounds like ours are similar... though I know the one tatting that my mom loves to keep from me are the flowers I made.

I really like the opalescent beads (well all of them actually) with that color thread strung on that color shuttle. The effect is very striking!

Was the shuttle one of those blinged from UminTsuru, perhaps?

  10. Very pretty motif! I like the way you recycle your beads.

  11. A piece of work (knitting, crocheting, tatting, whatever) that has a story (beads, thread, shuttle, pattern, or comments) makes it more valuable! Your work always has a story to it and that is, apart from your tattingskills, what makes it so funny to read. A bit of "open-ness" adds to that! We love to see your work PLUS the story behind it, Fox!

  13. Fox, it is weird when you tat something that I am already tatting, it has happened several times, I wonder if you have ever noticed? Anyway I am just over halfway through Mixed Bouquet! I have given up on blogging, but I may make an exception when I finish it, to show you how mine turned out. :)
I really enjoy reading your blog, often you make me smile, and sometimes laugh. I hope you continue, and I will certainly tell you "snap" next time we are tatting the same pattern at the same time.

  14. Lovely and looks beautiful, I am impressed with your recycling and looking forward to seeing what you do with the next set of beads.

  15. Lily - You are observant! Yes, it is the one Wendy sent to me, although one of the motifs is gone as I constantly rubbed it while tatting. But you spotted it anyway!
    Fox : ))

Snowy, I am a frequent lurker at your site BECAUSE of that bit of synchronicity that we share! Also, because I just love looking at your beautiful tatting.

But you do not post often! I have not been back in a few weeks so I will have another look!

No, I do not think it is weird, I think it is interesting and wonderful!

  16. That's REALLY pretty! I never would have thought to use those colors together but they look GREAT - you always make me think!

It's SO nice that your mom saves beads for you even though she's not a huge fan of tatting. It's also really nice that she, apparently, has a LOT of beaded stuff! :))))

  18. That's the mark of a great mom-- she supports you even in a pursuit that she doesn't really care about. It's so thoughtful of her to give you her beads because she knows the pleasure that using them will bring to you.

I love the color combination on that motif. The dark green on the chains really brings out the "bones" of the design, by which I mean that it highlights the shape very nicely.

  19. In my case, it is my daughter. She does not tat but is always on a lookout for ideas for me to tat. When she sees some lovely designs or something, she will suggest that I try translate it into tatting.
